Culture And Identity: A Theatre For Development Approach A Case Of Odi-Olowo Communiyt Mushin, Lagos State

Abstract

Historically, Lagos started around the Island and Mainland areas as a fishing and agricultural
village. It then grew into a small town and later advanced into a city-state. As time flowed by its
status changed from separate colony and later became the capital of the country to a state of its
own and finally a mega-city. However, in its advancement towards this stage, various social
challenges have befallen the state. This paper examined the extent of these challenges such as
decadence, stench, brutality and arson that have characterized the metropolitan areas of the
State and how they could be addressed and reduced to the barest level. Using the approach
of Theatre for Development (TfD), the research was conducted in Odiolowo Community in
Mushin, a metropolitan area in the state. Through the methodologies of Homestead
approach, Development communication and Participatory Performance workshop, the paper
investigated how TfD deployed as tool for the correction of social menace. The findings show
that the ever increasing population of Lagos and it becoming a mega city has persistently put a
strain on the social development of some communities as they are almost controlled by Area
Boys, lay abouts, and touts that have constituted themselves into community problems. The
paper concluded that what seems reasonable is for the state government to begin a
programme of re-orientating the people, especially the youths on the importance of education
and the re-acceptance of behavior change.
